[Faithful (adjective): firm adherence to promises; deserving trust, keeping promises]
God is the epitome of faithfulness. He speaks in promises and everything he speaks comes to fruition. If he promises he’ll do something, he does it. Period.
The Bible is God’s Word and as such it’s one long, beautiful promise. And what is this promise?
From beginning to end it all points to him. We were made for relationship: relationship with each other, but most importantly relationship with God, our creator. Sin separates us from God and creates a barrier to this relationship. Thankfully, God provided the way to him for us out of his deep, deep love.
God chose to come to earth in the flesh, to suffer and die for us that we might have restored relationship with Him. But how do we actually have relationship with God?
Once we’ve accepted Jesus as our savior we have 24/7 access to God. If we pay attention we’ll see his invitations sprinkled throughout the day. God doesn’t force his loving guidance on us. We have to accept his invitation and extend an invitation of our own.
Relationship requires spending time together; it requires conversation. If we want to hear from God, all we need to do is ask. He promises if we seek him, we will find him.
You might be someone who has never known this kinda of intimacy. I want you to know that it can be yours. All you need to do is ask. Take time to quiet your surroundings and your mind. Invite God into this moment. Talk to him. Tell him about your day, your worries, your fears, your joys. But this is only half of the beauty. The best part is hearing his whispers back.
A couple years ago I cried out to God that I wanted more. I wanted a deeper awareness of him, greater intimacy. I told him I was having a hard time hearing him and I didn’t know what to do. In that moment something in my heart nudged me to start reading my Bible everyday. And not just reading it, but devouring it.
As I continued to read, I started to notice I was hearing God more and more with greater clarity. Reading His Word is like tuning into a radio station. The more I read the clearer God’s station comes in. Now let me clarify, I don’t hear God’s voice audibly. It’s a welling up that starts in my heart and bubbles over. It would be more accurate to say I feel God’s voice.
You might be like I was. Desperate for more and unsure of where to start. My best advice? Read His Word. Study it. Learn it inside and out. God is faithful and he will respond. How do I know?
Because he promised. And God always keeps his promises.
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”
